Hey there, viewers welcome back to the self made on the channel. There's a 19.99 chevrolet, it's a tahoe. It's got the big five seven in it, relic uh the guy broke down across the street. So it's his lucky day.

Uh, the water pump is out of it and it beat its antifreeze all over the ground. So after that was cleaned up in accordance with state local area federal laws, he brought it over here. We need to check it out now and see if that's indeed what it is and then get it fixed. When i grab ahold of the fan, you can chuck the water pump around, so i'm certain, that's probably what it is and i saw peeing on the bottom of it.

So that's kind of the confirmation we're gon na see about getting this fan shroud off. The bolts are looking pretty crusty, i'm gon na go through and get them all loose, so we have two bolts down here on the side of the fan shower three across the top. We've got a battery cable here that goes over to the fuse box. We'll take that off uh, like i say, we'll, take off the five seven bolts total and see if we can pop that thing up out of here, probably gon na.

Take me a minute to get this to go on. All the heads of the bolts might have to spray them with a little panther pee that one's just doing a lot of plastic flexing i'll work at it. Folks and we'll be back a few casualties over here on this uh bottom corner of the fan shop passenger side. As soon as i turned them, the whole clip nut j-nut.

I guess they call them uh the clips on that lower shop. They were spinning, but it looks like uh. It's not this girl's, first rodeo, so not a big deal. Uh, we're gon na take the tension off the belt tensioner we're going to remove the belt this way here we can give the water pump a good wiggle, keep track of which way this belt's running.

Of course, this one's been soaked with coolant, so it's probably going to be noisy anyways, oh yeah. Ah, let's see here we're gon na have to get the uh fan off i'll see. If i can get something to hold that uh, it's got some oddball bolts in the fan or in the pulley there. So somebody's definitely been in there before, of course, being 22 years old with i don't know, 200 plus thousand on it.

Definitely not its first water pump. Never get this thing the right way, the first time yep get it right, 50 of the time every time. So what this tool is doing is we're gripping a hold of the bolts that bolt the pulley to the hub or to the water pump there and we're going to get a hold of it with a wrench here see if we can't crack it loose. I don't know why i've never bought the adapters for the air hammer.

Let's see if we can keep that right there. There we go, give her a little thump thread, don't let it come and smash into the radiator. You don't want that. It's regular thread, there's that so that's unthreaded there, oh baby them off we'll get the odd duck.

I think we can get new pull uh bolts for that pulley that drive me nuts having that oddball one on there, it's wrong size, fella. There you go first, try! I want to remove the pull just, so we can see a little bit better. I know you guys got a crappy angle trying to make it less crappy uh plus. We need to be able to see these uh two hose connections here now.
I've got a bucket under there. I i believe most of the coolant is out of this thing: we're just going to cut the lower hose loose the bypass hose and the heater hose there and uh. I think there's two bolts to hold this thing. There are four bolts that hold these things on and if the whole bike can be stuck, i can't pick on it a little bit here.

Oh you crusty. This still got some fluid in there could have kept driving it come on baby there she goes. Oh yeah drop the clamp, let her pee pee there kind of snakes around there. We go yeah, so we broke the bond, we're going to pull the water pump off then just pop those two off back.

When i was a young buck, these old chevy 5 7's are probably the most popular. They were the ls of my days, we'll call it you know everybody's doing their ls swaps. Well, that's a kid used to put a chevy small block in everything anymore. I don't think anybody messes with them now wiring harnessing the way over here can't get past.

It got ta get to get past it fella hey. I seen it move, so that's good there. It is we'll get bolts off it. I love modern vehicles.

That's some old stuff right here: fellas, not super old, but 22 years old and napper uh. Yet to sponsor a set us up, sent us up this water pump. Let's make sure it's the right. One hopefully make sure she's got a couple nipples on the top and it looks like it does all right.

So that appears right. We got the two up there. A little quieter now i did also have them: send up a water pump bolt kit, that's made by uh doorman, so fingers crossed we'll see if it is the correct lengths and correct threads uh, there's that napa re-boxes all their dormant stuff, they call it napa solutions. Uh same crap different bag, but it's supposed to have the water pump pulley bolts in it and it does.

We got four of those and we got four actual water pump bolts. However, they seem a little short. Are they too short, nope they're the right length, these old ones look looked longer typical guy problem, uh, so yeah, so we use those they were pretty cheap. They already got the sealer on, so we don't even have to clean our bolts, um i've already cleaned off the block.

It wasn't too hard because the paper gaskets were still stuck to the old water pump, clean them up, sprayed it off. Everything looks good we're going to get a little goop on here, make our gasket stick and then we'll slip it right in so we're going to use a little permatex spray tack. As you can see here on the label uh, you can't that's what we're using prior to that we're going to spray a little bit. Oh, you know what it is spray a little bit of the good stuff on there clean off any schmoo.
This is a brand new water pump. Not a remand, don't be fooled. It's still just chinese crap uh, it's just new instead of chinese crap reman. So we'll do this in a couple layers here, just spritz it on lightly i'll.

Let that dry for a couple minutes. We'll do it again. Stuff gets super tacky uh, like my jokes and then we're gon na use the paper gaskets stick them. Babies on we're only spraying, one side just because when this goes bad, it's a whole lot easier.

If we don't have to scrape all the crap off the block like the last guy did for us, which was super nice, i could say: stick those on stuff only takes a little bit of time to dry 30 seconds or a minute. The thicker you get it. The longer it takes so we'll do that and then we'll be back we're waiting for that to tack up we're going to swap out this hose right here, go from the intake to the water pump, it's kind of a bit of a pisser to get to with The water pump on - let me get this clamp out of the way we're gon na cut off we're gon na replace this get both hose. A lot of these hoses are uh kind of a cut yourself hose.

I don't i mean not like ah cut myself. In other words, they come a little bit long and you got to chop it down to what you need in some cases, so we're gon na. I guess what i'm saying is: don't destroy the hose because you might need to make a copy of it. Okay, so there's that little guy right there uh that it doesn't look like we need to cut that one at all, so that one is not a cut to fit so fantastic, we'll! Stick that baby right back on, like we found it napa part number 11025.

I'm gon na stick the clamp back on that and that should be good for us. Just got ta just bend her down a little bit. That would be perfect. I'm gon na get the clamps.

We can tighten it through here last person to put it on. Had it so you almost had to remove the water pump to do that, and we don't want to be that guy if we can avoid it. So same goes for this fella we'll get this one swapped out over right here. I think this one's quite a bit easier to do when the pump is on so this one we're just going to take right, clean off, right plumb, off we're going to save it.

It's just a little elbow, which you cut from this hose right here at your classic 9807 one size fits all 90 degree or from napper, and then we'll just uh. Take these right here when we get to the right size chop it off. You know what i'm saying: we're gon na wait to get the pump on for that one just so that stays out of our way, we'll loop, this one up out of our way: let's get our pump in there yeah. Let's see, i stuck our gaskets on they're, pretty tacky, it's very warm and humid out today, so they're not tacking up like we'd like but close enough.

We're gon na stick all the bolts in to keep the gasket from dropping. I mean it shouldn't drop but keep us from hopefully smearing it, and then i like to use a half inch drive and a 9 16 just because it gives you more girth to grab a hold of get past that harness just like that. It's up, there got ta get this top bolt started over here. Still, we should be in good shape there.
So that's all started. I think the wind's probably messing up my mic. We're gon na get the torque specs, obviously torque, that baby down to spec get our hoses hooked up. We're pretty much done now that you've got that torqued down we're going to take put our hose clamp over the hose and slip her down on all the way.

Yeah baby, what that goes deep and then make sure we don't want to go too deep. I want to make sure our 90. Our loop here is still good appears to be loosen up. Our clamp a little bit get that down here.

So that look good. I think i want to bring her up just a little bit more, the nipple's quite long that you slide it over. I don't want to have it. Kinked off probably should have lubed it.

That's all right. There we go slit up just enough make sure you can still feel the top. You know part of that barb. You don't want to have it up on the tip too much yeah.

You can feel that in there at least the width of the clamp and a little bit more, that's the general rule. We didn't screw up cutting this one. We should be in good shape flip that baby over come on there, you go so that one fits like a glove custom. Basically, a custom hose installer, so we'll go ahead and snug these ones up.

Also 86.31. That's the part number on the lower hose. Ah, i said to myself: i said self you might want to change that hose. You can either be safe or you can be sorry.

That's what i say you know me i'd rather be safe than sorry. It fits under the shrub, it's kind of a pain to uh. It's not a thing to do. It's a pain to record i'm gon na slip it back under the shroud and then we're gon na take back off where we put back on where we took back off, where you guys can actually see.

So you got to slip this down here by the idler arm. I guess it would be. It fits snugly in a little spot, make sure you've got that black slinky crap on there. Otherwise, the poor engineering from gm will allow it to rub straight through the hose.

The lower hose is on we're going to stick this pulley on the water pump pulley with our new bolts, so they all match hallelujah and then we'll stick that idler pulley back on. Then we can stick our serpentine belt on before we put the fan on tighten that up got a little construction going on over there. So that's why it seems noisy. I better put this on a level.

One perfect take our thread protector off there, this little plastic sleeve. They stick on all right. Let's get our belt. Oh yeah.

First, try look at that. There might only be one way it goes, there's only one right way. I know that we get the wrong belt. Could be there's about 17 different choices on what size belt, depending on what size alternator.
So i looked up the oem belt curved in which obviously is not correct awesome, because if somebody changes the alternator and gets rid of the puts oem different size on there. Well, here you are, we will default to plan b, which is just stick the old belt back on there. For now, we just want to get it running, make sure everything's cool and then what we'll do to get the new one we'll have to cross the number off this goodyear belt, which is a really good belt. These goodyear gator back belts are really good.

If you want a belt, that's not going to be noisy, those are typically it okey-dokey. I'm gon na get some cooling we're gon na fill it up. Before we put the radiator on before we put the radiator, the radiator is already in you, ding dong before you put the cooling pan on and we'll make sure everything's, good and hunky dory, and she warms up nice and all that stuff. Now i think originally this would have been a dexa cool filled, factory filled system.

Now, somebody's already done the big conversion on this, where they've gotten rid of dexcool and installed just standard green coolant. So that's what we're gon na fill it back up with, let's shut the ac compressor off just without the cooling fan on there. I don't want the condenser get too hot, we'll let her warm up i'll make sure we don't have any air in it. Let the thermostat open it's okay, to run it without the fan.

Trust me famous last words, so that's what we're gon na do well we're waiting for the thermostat to open there. I just use that opportunity to blow the junk out between the radiator ac condenser blow. Some of the garbage out of you know the radiator itself. I did feel it get warm so thermostat open, so we shut it off right there.

You don't want to leave it running long after that opens because there is no airflow, but you can run it until that point. So now we're going to screw on the pan. If you're real, clever, you can do this with the engine running. Just stick it up.

There poke and hope baby. I don't suggest doing that, though. If you do record it put it on tic tac for me, that'll be fun, grab a hold of a couple bolts here and then we're just going to lightly snug it until we can get our torque spec, obviously, and and do that properly, because we will look That up here eventually well, you know, and last but certainly not least, your upper fan shrug put it back on now down on the sides where those two bolts go or the four bolts go if one of the holes is completely chowdered up, that is a pretty Big lip all the way around. There feel free to drill yourself, some new holes and reuse, your clips and stuff in a different hole that makes sense to you uh.

This one went back on all the original holes where it was screwed up over. There was pretty easily fixable uh fans on, did look up that torque spec. So don't worry about that! That's torque to spec! These are going to get torqued to spec. That clip is clipped to spec and i think we're good.
We've got to top off our overflow jug. Now that it's gone through a cooling cycle, let's give her a little sucky back in there. That belt sounds nice and quiet, we're, probably just gon na leave it. I think we're good folks.

There you have it folks, uh water pump on your 1999 chevrolet, with a big five, seven, pretty easy job um having some flashbacks working on one of these things. I haven't seen one in a long time pretty solid uh engine by chevrolet and then i think they carried it up to like o2 or o3 in the express vans and they discontinued it in like 2, 000 or so into three-quarter tons when they started making that Transition to the new body style, which was a shame because it was pretty well perfected at that point, these are minor flaws and stuff, but there was a pretty good little engine while it lasted uh and we'll leave it at that. Leave your questions, your comments, your experience with your chevy five sevens down in that comment, section below the inste, the facebook, the bell ringing, you guys know all of it by now. Just remember viewers.

If i can do it, you can do it thanks for watching.

I noticed you're using your new toy, the right angle impact gun. I recently got me one & I don't know how I ever lived life without one before. My first useage was on a 95 FD350 &.5 spark plug replacement. Whoa were they in there tight. It took them out like a piece of cake. Thanks. I love your channel.

    Love your videos!
    I have a 1996 K1500Z71,that had 322,000 miles,when I got it.
Replaced the 5.7l,with another one with 69k,on it..
The Vortec used a standard 350SBC block, and just changed the heads, and intake, and deleted the mechanical fuel pump, and used roller cam/lifters. ,basically.
    A good engine .

I agree those old 350’s were good power plants. I have had a couple and had very few problems with them . I presently own a 2000 Tahoe Limited (only produced one year) built on the 1999 body/frame. Still in great condition and it just turned over 166,000 miles. It is a solid tank of a Tahoe.

In one video Eric O quoted a judge telling him "ignorance of the law does not exempt you from the law"…I sort of plagiarized that quote and used it elsewhere.
Apparently, several lawyers representing an ex-president are using the defense that they weren't aware lying in court, and on legal documents regarding their nonsense lawsuits was illegal, so they ARE exempt from the law.

I notice fewer impacts are being used. Impacts are fast, but they lack feel. I prefer to feel the mating of mechanical objects. Then, I'm not working under time pressure. Although, doing it a bit slower, is ALWAYS better than doing it twice.
I owned a sourdough bread bakery, the previous owners had used mild cheddar cheese in a cheese/garlic/basil loaf because it was the cheapest cheddar.
I started using sharp cheddar even though it cost half again more. BUT to get the same flavor required only half as much of the sharp (to double the mild cheddar). The end product was vastly improved (less oily) and the production cost was lowered by simple logic.

60's and 70's a water pump replacement took 15 minutes with good room to work. Are new cars over designed or poorly designed. Working in an engineering department for 35 years, our goal was to design electrical and mechanical systems for easy assembly and repair.
I remember my grandmother's Newport had at least a foot from the grill to the engine.

My first vehicle was a 97' Chevrolet K1500 "Heavy Half" 5.7 with 230,000 on the clock. Took that thing all the way to 297,000 before a tree fell on it and completely destroyed the cab and busted the top of the entire manifold. I'm convinced to this day that baby had 350,000 in her easily.

This video also applies to the 4.3 v6 as well. The whole front of the engine is exactly the same except for the fan blades and thermostat housing. My 97 Safari (one owner) has 415000km on the odo. One thing we found out over the decades is do not use a cheap new water pump or else. AC Delco or get it rebuilt locally. On pump # 3 we changed a bunch ourselves as well and went with an aluminum new fenco unit from china (autozone). 6 months later the bearings disintegrated and sent the fan into the 6 month old rad and broke the 6 month old belt and the 6 month old adjuster and bent the 6 month old clutch and the 6 month old rad hose. Happened on christmas eve. That was over $1200 for tow, hotel and fix in the end plus the cost of everything 6 months earlier. The warranty replacement pump leaked bad after 3 weeks. Another $400 again to tow (100km) and get it back to an AC Delco pump.
