In this video I have a look at a customers 2017 Honda Civic. He replaced his own rear brakes and then after doing so the red brake warning light was on along with the service brake system light and warning alarms going off! He did take it to another shop before bringing it in to us and they told him he needed two new parking brake actuators! Boy that would have been an expensive mistake. Let's use some logic and figure out what is really wrong with it. -Enjoy!

Hey there viewers and welcome back to the self made all channel. We are inside the 2017 hondu she's, a civic, find all the off buttons here, make sure nothing, don't blast us uh. Evidently, the feller did his brakes uh in the back, and now it has this blinking red brake light and says brake system. So i'm gon na see if the parking brake works.

Oh it appears too. I felt the tunnel drop yeah parking brake's holding one of them is anyways and it releases ah fancy. Okay, let's go see what happened. It's kind of weird that uh, of course not all the dingers are going off uh.

He did mention that if it needs actuators, he has them in the back. According to his note, so that'd be nice. If that's all, it is and we got the parts. Even these are the lights that are currently on in case you're, wondering here we're going to see if it just tells us an answer we'll pop into the abs.

I believe it's under on the hondues, we'll see what codes are in it. If any, there's got to be that little guy's blinking the fact that it doesn't work, some of these hondas have their own electronic parking brake section. So we'll see here we'll just see if we have the codes or what we need necessary in the abs section. Now, let's see we have a 1110-13 permanent left rear parking, brake actuator circuit open.

Well, that's pretty cut and dry left rear. Actuator circuit, open fancy, uh, let's go to live data, see what we can see in there before we get back there. Maybe it is just a bad actuator: oh let's see, let's just sort out anything has to do with the parking brake parking, brake actuator supply hasn't been working for a while from the looks of it or it's been fiddled with here. Let's see, let's just try hold my foot on the brake, put it on release it applying.

I want to release. Oh it wants me to step on the brake. It's flashing. Oh, you didn't see it.

There's a brake light flashing up there. I wasn't pushing hard enough. So now it's released now it's engaged step on the brake again and now it's released, so i could see that voltage was applying on the right side, but not the left, and that could be simply because it has the circuit code. Let's go have a look so how about this folks before we get super super complicated? Why don't we just have a look-see uh? I just gave it kind of a visual inspection.

Look at the cable here. It goes back and clamps in. I don't see anything blatantly obvious uh, let's just check for goods and giggles. If we can get this thing unplugged, i don't know how this connector works back here.

Um we have to get a mirror. We can get the sucker unplugged i'll figure out how to get it. Unplugged and we'll just see if the it should be just electric motor should be just a couple ohms of resistance. If the windings in the motor are good, maybe the other connector is easier to get to and then um.

You know if that's just completely open circuit and then you know boom. There's your problem, lady, but let's uh, let's find out epic fail uh. I cannot figure out how that connector comes off the caliper. However, the jumper harness comes up to here - and this was a pretty standard - you know push type connector.
Now i see there's four pins in it. It's kind of hot - and i see there are four wires coming back here. Two little guys uh, like 22 gauge, maybe 24 and then two jumbo heads which the jumbo should be for the pregnancy actuator, but it appears that there are all four wires running with us. I don't know i don't know what they are, because they come right straight to the parking brake actuator.

That's kind of odd. I don't know what they're for um we're probably going to get a diagram, i'm gon na. Take it just for the heck of it. We're gon na see if there is continuity across these big two, because they should go straight to the motor.

I think and look let me make sure my leads are good. My leads are good. Looking at my meter, it is completely open on those two big wires. Uh well, so i think i think a couple things hey.

I think mrs doe looks really nice today. I just seen her walk by and uh b. I don't know what these two little wires are for, so we should get a diagram, but also we got to pull the wheel to get to the other connector uh. So before we get too hung up, what the other little wires are for.

Let's pull the pull. The wheels and get that connector off the parking brake actuator - oh it's not too bad to get off. Once you get the wheel off uh you do have to reach underneath it to flick the release, tab man. I tried tweaking back on that sucker pretty good huh.

That seems to work once it's off now down here. I do only see two wires at the actuator. So what in the thunder where in the thunder do the other two go just to make sure i'm not being duped uh? I was gon na say we're gon na pop this rubber back, but i think i think i might have found your problem. Lady yeah.

We certainly did you know what i've been down this road before folks uh, if looking at this connector. Oh, it reminds me of a time when this feller came in with a subaru same complaint. Hey, i did my brakes now. Everything's broke and uh.

It was from another shot down the road. I don't do a lot of work for they set the car down to have it reprogrammed. Anyhow, uh long story short, the caliper had slipped out of his hands, fell, yanked and pulled the connector apart, but the connector looked intact and i'm like how can that be? Because when you look in the end of this connector, you can see both metal pins. Both female halves are right here, they're, looking us right in the face, saying: hey i'm here, i'm happy we're having fun, but this was a weird connector, because i remember this gray horseshoe clip in there just a minute.

Let me show you a little something. I think this is the same exact scenario. Uh. Let me get this wire harness unclipped we're going to learn a little something together and uh oops a lot of pain in the holy hole come on baby there.
She is. I just got to get this harness up where we can, where we can touch it work on it. There we go. Let's see, let's see if we're correct, we got some tape to take off.

Let me see if i can get everybody where everybody can see. We'll talk, we'll laugh, we'll cry. Actually we won't cry because working on cars is a lot like baseball and there's no crying in baseball famous quote. Who knows where it's from huh? So let's un-tape this son got it.

Let me tape that little guy take off the rubber bada bing bada boom. Look at that see. Why do we have an open circuit because right there fella and you would think that that's the terminal, but it's not, can you guys see inside that connector? You see both metal terminals, but one slightly different than the other. Now, if i remember correctly on the subaru that i did like this, you cannot simply push it back in and click it and lock it because i remember sitting here like what in the and and i remember remember when that's a good song who sings that helen Jackson, yep, you pull out this little grey horseshoe clip in here this little guy.

I remember it's all coming back to me and then i think at that point, can you stick it in? What did we get? What did i have to do after that? There was something else i had to do after that. Can't just go shoving it in or can you no? Let me flip it around this case. I got it upside down, oh sir, so not like that either. Let me go back this way.

Nope! No, sir! No siree uh there's something else or something else we're missing. I remember fiddling with this for a long time before i finally got it then i strutted around, like i just did something amazing and clearly i forgot what i did let's see. Perhaps if this tab will release now or if it is released, it is not released, you may have to get a releasing tool, don't think they want you to take things apart is what it comes down to um. Let me let me poke around on this.

For a little bit here, folks i'll get you when the getting's good that's latch, regardless of pulling this out, it's still latched together. Let me get some release. Tools come on baby, it's way at the bottom. Let me get a different tool.

This we just need to push. I think it's because it's fully released just down here, hiding new door, dinger huh, how you like that, what the frick did it fall out and i didn't see it: oh yeah it did it ding dong, i didn't even see it fell right inside the rubber dongle. Here, let's get a hold of that now so here's this so this is the metal insert that's inside the connector and one of the lock tabs did not release but indeed folded over on me, so we're going to straighten that back out straighten this back out. Let me get a little tiny pair of pliers to get this all back together.
Okay, now, that's all straightened out. We got to see if we can click this back on that terminal and then get the thing fed back together. Let me turn that around actually i'll show you once uh because see i like to do things with the light in the way, so nobody can see jerk i'll show you once it's all together brought its way together and at this point, we're just faking it until We make it because i don't know 100 click, but it does click and lock on. Look at that.

So we do know what we're doing and hits, and hence that's what it will look like once it's all snapped back together, uh kind of an odd duck. This double double donger connector. Now we got to get it clicked back in that unhealthy slot number two come on baby. We don't want it to fall back apart, come on baby click in there she's, almost all the way in we want to get that weather pack.

Back in there also, it is up in all the way you can see that it is completely clicked in so to prevent it from clicking out. Let's stick the gray horseshoe thing back in there. I don't know what all you guys can see, because i can't see crap it's too glary. Okay, so that's clicked back in so it should not slip back out.

However, i did notice that the weather pack connector or the weather packing on the back of the connector here, was a little fudged up from being yanked on and it was torn at the bottom. Regardless we're going to see if we can't get it kind of stuffed back in the hole, keep some of the schmoo out anyways we just got ta, go around and work it and heads and heads, and then heads so there you are folks. Uh looks good for my house, you can see, we got the weather pack back in there. I don't know if that has a groove in there, that it pops out into um, but you just got ta fiddle with it and then we're gon na stick this back.

This cover back up on here like so and then we're gon na get some tape, because the bottom of this you can see is from the factory they split it out and then we're gon na stick that back over top of the black rubber at the bottom. We're going to wrap it with some tape and heads and then we're going to plug it back in, and this thing should be good. Full russian no parts required free tip friday for you scotch super 88, probably the best tape on the market or possibly even in the world. However, the rolls are gigantic.

Oh, it smells so good. I love opening a new roll of tape uh and you need a little roll guy taught me this trick. I learned this from the youtube and i've shared this trick and people think you're like the next. The next best thing: it's like erico.

2024. You need a small roll, you take your 10. Take your 10 millimeter astro tools, 10 millimeter, to be specific, with the glow in the dark stuff on it. It only works with air sockets so make sure you buy their sockets.

Oh, that's not true, then take and just start wrapping it up baby, and then you get yourself what they call a mini roll. I could probably do this nicer, it's easier when the tape roll's, not so big, but you just keep winding her up folks and then i'll show you you're like wow, that's stupid, yeah until you're trying to get into a tight space, fella a guy really tongue. Lashed me one time on youtube because i tore my electrical tape. Wow that lost his mind.
So we don't want that fella to lose his mind and then that's it folks. So that's how you make a little mini electrical roll tape using your astro pneumatic 10 millimeter quarter, inch drive comes in a nice four piece set and they all have glow in the dark stuff, because you're going to lose many ways: they're all 10 millimeter, full 10 Millimeter set they sell, let's see if i can find a link for it. If i remember we're gon na click that back in the clicker click that back into the clicker, there he's latched locked and loaded in theory that should work before we put the tire on. We don't want to get cocky, let's make sure it works.

Let's see if we can sneak in here sneak peek snake. Let's turn the key on. Let's just see, if our lights go, i guess we can start it sucker. You still got all your lights on.

Let's engage, engage parking brake now, oh made a lot of noise back there. A lot of like i had to take up the slack now we're going to release release red parking brake is still flashing down there, but the brake system light is not there. She goes she's out on a row. All we did is cycle it a couple times.

Let's see if we can do ko eo, let's kion engine off, we'll see if we can hear it ready like a charm. Now, let's go in here. This is where we left off with it, we'll back back out: oh shoot. You know what we could have stayed right.

There, yeah yeah, ding dong, go back in um p to the a to the r to the k, oh yeah, our counters change. So, let's see voltage applied release. If i had some ocd, i don't know how i would correct this. I'd have to unplug the right side and sit in here and flick and flick and flick until i got to the same counter.

Make me panic a little we're going well there you have it folks uh, like i said this is the second time i've encountered this uh first time being on a subaru which had the same exact connector. I mean like to the t, because i remember all the little jiggly bits and saying what you know, because i looked at it and i'm like it's got the metal male terminals in it. But if you, if you examine them close - and i know it's not going to show up good on video you'll - see the female halves of the connector but they're being that they're two-piece that had that you know sleeve that went on it so to speak. You'll see that they do look different, but at a glance, if you're just like oh there's a connector yep, they look good.

You see the metal, dongers and you're moving on um. It could have been a bad deal. Of course. We we our next step.
You know if we looked at that and i didn't haven't been down this road before i had seen this. We would have checked resistance in the motor itself. We would have seen it was low. You know two ohms three ohms whatever it is just a little dc motor back there and then we would have you know ohmed out the harness and said hey.

You know bad harness, you know whatever, and if you replace the harness, yes, you would have fixed it. But, however, this wasn't too hard to fix, didn't look like there was any damage done, the connector still clipped together. Nothing was broke, it just yanked itself. Apart, no idea why they use that style connector, maybe some of you ees as they like to be called electrical engineers.

Uh can tell me why they use that multi-piece. You know funk on that thing. Uh, i'd love to know! Anyhow, why don't you? Let me know down in that comment section, even if you're, not an ee, what you think uh - and i think that you should go to the institute - go to the facebook go to that subscribe button. You click them all.

You ring all the bells and just from our viewers, if i can do it, you can do it thanks for watching.

was told by my caddy dealer that i needed brakes and rotors, he said he was very concerned with the back. about 500.00 was the quote. it was more than buying the tools and doing it myself. replaced them with the fancy holed and slotted zinc set for about 260. i put both squealers on one side on the back set(oops) but when i removed the old set they were practically brand new, couldn't even feel a ridge with my finger nail. still had a quarter inch to the old squealers, still had 85%. yeah they were ripping me off. wanted to replace my tires at 350 each. i got all four top grade tires at sam's club for less than 800.00. dealers suck. had to replace both leaky hid headlight assemblies cost 3,000 bucks from GM. law suit got me a 1,600.00 refund from Cadillac. did all the work myself, first time working on my own car, i'm very ill but i got her done. Thanks bro and you tube.

Hay Eric o very interesting, good to see that you repaired it most people would have just replaced the lead . It’s the difference between a service person and a good mechanic.

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Nearly Normal says:

What an engineering marvel that connector is. It can fall apart but it takes a mechanical genius to put it back together. Who ha Honda! Stick to Toyota.

Yo, nice tip, with the socket to the electrical tape, you can also use a Regular – PENCIL -,
on the, "GOT 2 LEARN" Channel,
It shows you how to do it with "Teflon tape ", if you're in a tight spot…
    Thanks for the VID. tho,
    Eric! 👍👍

never seem to stop amazing me with your desire to find what's wrong and figure out how to fix it. the connector issue was great just figuring out how it works an connects all the intricate things needed to reconnect a connector that had pulled apart. Super "Come on Baby" !!!! then remember you had encountered same situation before. absolutely the best stuff to find out what's wrong no matter what it is .

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars pomonabill220 says:

I have done the trick with the tape for years, BUT i use a 3/8" socket sometimes and other times a 1/2" socket or whatever is close by. Does that void the tape warranty?

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Daniel Tolle says:

I say the reason they use those chinsy fragile style connectors is because of that very reason. The least little thing goes wrong with the connection and you have a check engine light. I work on diesel trucks and this happens all the time with this stupid after treatment system. The isn’t really that big. But you now have to pay a guy like me to fix it.

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars CottenEye Joe says:

this car must get some heavy hard use to need rear brakes replaced at 43000 miles. my 2011 had 63 ooo miles and only one one end of one of the 2 shoes on each side showed any signs of wear, so i only replaced those 2 shoes and left other ones on.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars turkey ssr says:

Great video. Why, oh why, do we need motors to engage the emergency brake? Another reason to keep my 2007 Civic. Deeper question: what did the rear brakes need to be replaced at 43k miles? My 2007 didn't need them until 100k.
