In this video I show you how I replace the flex pipe on a car instead of replacing the entire convertor saving the customer thousands over an OEM convertor. -Enjoy!

So, underneath the 2018 ford ecosport don't know what engines in it. I didn't look for raised up it's a little guy and uh it's loud as a mother. You know a lot of mothers get uh and obviously that's your problem, lady. No, i think it sounds pretty good our 90, that baby are out inside drive around down like a jerk, but he wants it quiet.

However, this flexi pipe is part of this pipe, which is part of the converter. You have to buy the whole converter to get this, whether it's aftermarket or you know, oem and it's you know, half a bazillion dollars. However, the rest of the pipe looks pretty good. Now it normally goes on here with a flange and what i'm thinking uh, because it's already junk.

Why don't we see if we can't get from our friends at walker? Not a sponsor? This happens to be the brand napper sells. A uh looks like two inch pipe like a two 2-inch flexi. I think they come in like 10 or 12 or 14 inches. This looks like it's probably a foot, we'll measure it up, we'll, take and cut this heat shield off cut the tack welds right here.

It's got a strap up here, kind of get that out of the way, take the sawzall chop it off, we'll chop it off right here we won't disturb uh, this connection, uh right now and then we'll just see if we can't weld in a flex joint. It's not rocket surgery here, folks, but uh. I thought i'd bring it along and show you some alternatives to buying a two gazillion dollar converter. For you know a 50 flex pipe.

I don't want to cut through nice. Let me check the other side here. Perfect, perfect. Put on a cupcake strap we'll just use a hose, clamp or just throw that thing in the trash, but we're making a youtube video, so we're gon na put it back, we'll just weld it back on host clamp there boom, it may be.

It may be an air gap pipe, i don't know, it's got a funny shape to it. Let's get the saws off chop it off chop off that side and see how many inches we're gon na need. How many inches do you need baby uh, ten and a half just a little on the short side? Folks, i think they're 10 inch and 12 inch. We may end up using a 12 inch.

They usually come with a couple pieces of pipe off each end, so we might just have to chop it off. Ah, i think that's what it's looking like and oh, is it two inches see? Oh yeah two inch id it's kind of smooshed down right there. If we, but if we get one, that's two inch id it'll work perfect because they bring the pipe down, then it's kind of they kind of reduce it a little bit. But a two inch id pipe would work perfect because it would slip right over this.

It would slip over this for the most part which this side that'll be great. It'll get us right up to where it bells out there. So that'd be good. I'm gon na take a whizzy wheel, we're gon na clean up some of the rust and junk on it.

So we can weld this when we're done and uh same on this side. I think we'll leave the pipe, even though we're gon na yeah we'll leave it. I'm just gon na whizzy wheel, it clean it up and um, oh before we get too far here, rule number one on the youtube, never and i mean never weld. That is a lesson that any youtube and noob will learn uh unless you're running the weld.com channel.
Do not weld because, as you're gon na find out here in a couple minutes, everybody in that comment section is a professional welder, except for me and i'm not a professional welder, so be warned. Madrid just showed up still not wanting to sponsor us uh. We got this bad boy right here, so it's your classic, 735. 71.

22, it's a 12 incher and then 735 71 21, which is your 10 incher. I had them send up both that's a 10 incher, just like real life, it's a little bit too short! So we're going to go with full 12.. I think what we'll do we'll just chop it off just a little bit. I'm gon na take um, i mean we could whack it off on both ends a little bit, but i think we'll just we'll just blast it off here on one end, we'll take uh, let's say we'll use our tape measure, so we can get a legitimate measurement Here, that's going to come down onto that flange flare just a little bit, let's whack three quarters of one inch off this.

I'm going to mark this around just cut it with a cut off wheel and then that will give us plenty to stick up on there. Stick up over there and we should be good. Let's see how that works. There we go.

I think that'll work, just fine uh. I stuck a clamp up here, uh because it's easier than trying to get the ground rod or the ground uh clamp up there. I just use a pair of vice grips. We're gon na get this tacked and uh, then we're gon na buzz it on there.

The best! Okay, yes, so so make sure it's tight, that's not going to vibrate um! Technically! You could probably leave it like that. It is pretty snug, i think, we'll just put a couple tacks on it, just simply because we have the welder out here and uh there shouldn't be any more than there we're good. Well as long as it's quiet, i guess i don't hear any pissing up here. Don't feel anything, i don't feel anything on that one looks good to me, folks, that's kind of good anyways and that's that folks, uh walker does sell a variety of these flex pipes all different sizes with or without the nipples uh right down.

I think four inch, so these have saved my bacon a ton of times, particularly in situations like this, where you have to buy the whole converter, which is ridiculous. You know it's an 18, it's out of warranty. It's got too many miles on it and it simply just has a broken flex. So not nothing new, not new technology.

Muffler shops have been doing that for years. They obviously do a much better job than we do and you also do a better job than we do because you're a welder and i'm not, but before you go on your next welding job, go into that comment sections the questions. The comments wait on here subscribe to insty the facebook and just remember viewers. If we can do it, you can do it who's me.
I'm also my father.

Nice repair! Now if only they would make aftermarket flex pipes that last a little bit longer. I've had a pretty bad experience with those Walker pipes. A year or two later and they're rusted through. Here in Pennsylvania

So, if I start a gardening channel. And if I want to get a bunch of comments and reactions to my videos to help my channel grow, I just need to show some welding in my videos?

  3. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Jerry Can says:

They make those parts that combine multiple parts for assembly plant to lower production time and it's nice to see people like you who live in the real world and replace only what is needed.

  4. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Duane Vette says:

Enjoy your channel, noticed how long you had let the car run inside your shop, maybe some time you could talk about carbon monoxide positioning, even having a vehicle backed out halfway with the door open how people have gassed their self. Thanks for your time

  5. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Honcho says:

Dont live in the rust belt but im sure where you are at even if the welds looked perfect when they rolled out the shop it would look like a crusty cheeto by end of winter anyway

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Chris Smith says:

I've seen some people mention emissions warranty, I wonder if that would have covered this or not. Part of me thinks ford would've said that just the catalyst portion of the converter is covered under the emissions warranty, and not the flex pipe failure.

Eric, didn't you know that EVERY YT commenter on EVERY channel is a professional welder/mechanic/bodyman/driver/computer tech/fashion critic/actor/director/news anchor/fabricator/off road driver or recovery guy/doctor/lawyer (especially on dashcam crash channels)/speech therapist/chef/English teacher/ etc. Me, I was a professional mechanic, and I would allow you to do any repair on my car (probably not my Corvair, tho)- including welding!

  8. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Philip Combs says:

Is anyone else amazed that a 2018 model year vehicle of any manufacturer would already have this type of exhaust failure and need this repair done? I mean this car was brand new from a car lot 3 years or less ago, I wouldn’t be very impressed if my 2018 anything already had a noisy exhaust requiring repair.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Dionicio Gamez says:

The 39 ppl who disliked this video are probably thieving techs who would of done the repair the exact same way but charge the customer for a whole new catalytic converter lol

  10. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Southpawsgarage says:

NICE JOB…IVE HAD TO GO INSIDE ON ONE END SOMETIMES….BUT ITS A LOT CHEAPER THAN CONV ASSEMBLY…AND CUSTOMER USUALLY LIKES PRICE MUCH BETTER..

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Randall Orr says:

Its like this. At least you can weld. I absolutely suck at it. I have been wrenchin for over 30 years and can't weld worth a, well you know.
