In this video I have a look at a 2013 Chevy 1500 that came in with a customer complaint of no 4x4, the service 4wd light on and a C0306 stored in the transfer case control module. Let's have a look at see what the problem is. -Enjoy!

Hey there, viewers welcome back to the self maintenance. We have our 2013 chevrolet, it's a 5'3 uh service, 4-wheel drive, light is on and the guy wants to find out why i've got the battery maintainer on it got the scanner over there doing a full scan and i had to tell you do a full scan In case you didn't know and uh we'll see, what's going on and see what codes it throws all done reading, so we do have a code stored in it. There skip that and we'll see what he says: range actuator, control circuit voltage open. It's a current code failed failed to fail.

Temp control, that's in the driver's door, switch passenger door switch. So the one we're concerned with is the c0306 for the range actuator control. Sorry, i think that's the motor, like the actual the range actuator would be have to be the transfer case motor circuit. So maybe it's just simple as a failed transfer case motor, let's figure right here on the scan tool.

We will look uh, see transfer case motor bi-directional permanent magnet energize through a or b the ground is provided to the opposing motor control circuit then grounded through the transfer case control module. So basically, i think what we are looking at is the transfer case, uh encoder motor and basically, what it's saying it has two wires and they'll flip-flop uh polarity on them kind of like a power window usually will to run it one way and run it. The other way uh conditions for setting uh. This is what we're, after right here, conditions for setting this would be your code set criteria, uh transformation control, module tests, the motor circuits by checking for unexpected voltage, uh the tcm supplies voltage on each of the motor circuits and then reads voltage back on the other Circuit or probably the opposite circuit uh, if the tcm detects a low voltage return, when a high is expected or a high return, when low is expected, it logs the fault uh all shifting is disabled.

The mode light show flash upon request will change current mode service. Wheel, drive indicator remains lit until the next cycle, so that seems uh pretty easy, and i do know that there is a service bolted on this too, because i seen that or was it right here and i believe that's for a connector. I think i've seen this one before um there's a connector that has yes this x, whatever connectors number. This is x, 109 transfer case control, module blah blah blah if you're getting a 3l6 code.

Evidently the pins will push out of this connector wherever it is. I don't think i've ever successfully had to go that far or have even looked for that connector so, but keep that in mind. Let's, let's come up with a plan here: let's get a wire diagram so before we even get under there to look, let's make sure we're all on the same page. So this is a pretty simple circuit sort of speaking, simple logic that the pcm uses to determine.

You know circuit code, so just very generically, let's say the magic box, so here's the tccm transfer case control module very simply wire coming out goes over here, that's the shift motor so and then we got the other wire comes back now. I didn't label them polarity. Wise because, let's say we want this to go in a you, know a clockwise rotation, and to do so the tcm has to apply power here and a ground here. But now you know it's made the shift.
Now we want to go back into two-wheel drive and let's say we want to go counter-clockwise now. It changes that to plus and that to minus, simply running the motor in the opposite direction. So that's pretty easy, that's kind of in a nutshell how that works. Of course, there's more magic that goes on in the box to do that now.

How does it tell whether or not there's a circuit problem is because what it will do is you know key on engine off or kion into running or at any point it's going to apply power like it said voltage to one wire or the other, and it's Going to look for an unexpected voltage on the opposite wire, so let's say it applies power here. Power should come here through the brushes through the windings, and power should come back out here. So if the tcm puts power here, it should go on back to the tcm and when it looks at it here, it should see 12 volts or battery battery voltage, at least until it sends it to ground and vice versa. If it puts power on this one, when it comes over here and measures it over here, it should see 12 volts over there, assuming the motor is not being turned on.

So when it looks here, power here comes through should be power in power out. If it doesn't see it turn on the lights, warning warning well, there's kind of a familiar sight for us. It is the s t daewoo. We just did a video on one of these.

It had a uh, the lock solenoid and it was bad uh, causing the battery to go dead overnight. So long story, short long story short. Where am i from new york city, but all those guys say: hey eric long story short and then for the next hour. They tell me the story, so what we need to do.

We got a tan wire and an orange wire tan and orange. Pin a and pin d: okay pin a and b that's the motor control. So what i'm gon na do against my better judgment is we're just gon na go over for the gusto we're gon na come under here and unplug this little guy there it is. I see it has some grease on it.

Some dielectric grease of some sort or some kind of anti-corrosive grease we've got a tan and an orange up there. Now it looks like we have a couple cans, but it did say a and d because we got kind of a light tan and a dark tan. Maybe that's a white peel back the tape a little bit here. It said a and d ointment, let's find out which one's a and which one's d uh.

Let's see, let's see if c, is red with black that was gon na. That's gon na answer some questions here. Uh a b c c is ready black b. I just want to make sure that i'm on the correct wires here, um 10 ignition dark blue where's - is that brown black d.
Let's see b, is black. Hey man, yeah ding dong, that's a long, freaking diagram that just goes to show. You can't trust this guy uh a is tan d, is orange b b is red and black correct and then c must be. What are they calling c tan see? I told you there's a couple of hands there, so you got to make sure you're using the right hand.

So it's the two on the outside edge. A couple ways we could solve. That is how we just did it just by looking at the other, corresponding wires. Um or we could have got a connector view, so it's gon na be these two outside ones.

So what i wan na know, i'm going to show you something quick and dirty. Let me go get a test light, so i got a high ampere test light here. Let's jumper this baby very gingerly front probe that we're going to go right across those two now it should not light up just little fyi. It should not light up.

However, i should be able to go. Let's go in our scan tool. I'm just going to talk. You through, instead of moving the camera, i'm going to go to the transfer case, control, module, we're going to go to active tests and then range lock for a transfer case.

Neutral indicator range actuator. Here we go for range, actuator, uh set transmission and neutral. I don't have the training neutral son of a mother we're going to let it down okay, we're going to try to turn it clockwise. Let's just see what it does.

Oh, it lights up. Look at that little fella that that's good. Okay, i'm going to escape now we're going to go back into that test, we're going to go counter and technically it should light up also counter-clockwise boom. There is nothing more to see here, folks that must be bad.

The tree cap uh. Well, i tell you what let's try this here. Let me show you something: let's pop back out to our trouble codes here, we're gon na have a host of codes now, but the 306 i'm wondering if it changed status to past and failed. You know what i mean because now so c0306, this ignition passed and failed uh.

Let's see - and of course you know, we've got these these codes in it because we haven't unplugged, but i'm thinking you watch this. If i'm right, our code will be gone. The 306. we'll have those lock actuator codes, but our 306 should be gone because now we have connection, see what i mean so now we just have range actuator, lock circuits codes.

Now, if i remove this test light test lights removed, let's read the codes. I think that was continually monitored. It said i had to fail for one. Second, we should have a 306 now, i'm thinking boom.

Look at that huh almost like. I know what i'm doing well. That was easy, plug that back in now, we're gon na take i'm gon na clear the codes again and see if we have a 306, and that would tell me that we have an open circuit in this motor and you can see motor plugged in the only Code we have left now is a 306 easy, so that's that folks simply needs a transfer case shift motor due to an open circuit, good chance. We whacked that thing with a hammer uh, it's probably lost contacts in the brushes.
The guy who owns this thing's kind of an old dude - i doubt he's ever used the four-wheel drive. So it's probably you know it's probably just that little bit of corrosion in here probably has finally lost contact, and you know that's that this truck hardly has any miles on. I want to say it was like 50, some thousand, but it's old and rusty uh and you know, obviously these have some sort of corrosion problem. Uh, like we showed uh in that last video that we didn't.

We didn't tear the sucker apart and i felt ashamed because i went in and looked at the core charge and it wasn't that much we should have just tore it apart. So shame on me: if i was ivan, you guys know i'd be taking that thing apart. We'd be going full, rushing no parts required, but i'm not and i've got to stand behind my work. So we're going to give this guy a quote on a new transfer case motor.

I think we've proved uh by jumping the test light across there. Uh, hey that service data is correct. It does you know how it monitors that circuit and uh b. We also proved that you know we can put a four amp load on that clockwise and counterclockwise, or you know, reversing the polarity both ways.

So it tells me the tcm works, the wiring's good and it has the ability to you know, pull some amps. So there's not a good segue for the word pulling amps that i can think of comment section comments, concerns criticisms, the bell, the insty, the facebook and just for my reviewers. If i can do it, you can do it thanks for watching you.
