In this video I have a look at a 2011 Chevy 2500HD that has a message coming across the dash that says "Service Trailer Brake System" and I find it has a code P2534 stored in the module. It has been bounced around to a few shops but it ends up being a quick fix. Let's get after it. -Enjoy!

Hey there viewers and welcome back to the south bank, auto channel sitting inside the 2011 chevrolet, it's the 2500, it's the 6-0. It's got the rubber floor manual, four-wheel drive, she's a wt, no tape deck, no cd player; no, nothing! That's how we like them. Rolly polly windows and manual locks uh. The guy left me a letter stuck it in my pocket, see what he says and he writes with fantastic penmanship.
I might add, dear eric, thank you for looking at my truck. I purchased my truck with this problem service trailer brakes. He puts three mechanics looked at the problem and found the following. First mechanic found broken wire at trailer, brake relay plug fixed second mechanic, replace trailer brake relay from napper, not a sponsor.
Third mechanic replace trailer brake module and that was done by the dealer. The module cannot be programmed, however, due to low voltage. He is told please troubleshoot and repair, there's no hurry and you can have it as long as necessary. Word of advice, folks, never use those words to your mechanic in your life.
If you do leave the title in the car because you're never getting it back now your rights love always bob 2011 chevrolet, 2500 hd, 6. 0. L. Well, bob we're going to see what we can do for you little buddy.
I've got the all-tail over here we're going to get her scanning and see. What's going on sounds like he has a problem with the trailer brake control module not having enough voltage according to the dealer, a couple codes in it, abs and trailer brake control, module skip our mileage, trailer, brake control, module says refer the service manual, but we're after This trailer brake control module, i'm sorry, abs, control, module said that trailer, brake control module indeed does say ignition. One switch circuit, low voltage. So that's interesting.
I'm surprised it doesn't have a uh other code in it for not being programmed but um we're gon na we're. Gon na chase this down, i mean it sounds like it's missing a power feed. So, let's find out where this ignition one switch circuit goes to the trailer brake control module, we'll verify that it is or isn't there and then we'll find out where it comes from and then we'll see. What's going on just taking a peek here in service data uh, let's see uh the trailer brake control module monitors the ignition voltage circuit in order to determine if the voltage is within normal operating range.
Okay seems simple enough. That checks it when the ignition is on battery voltage is between 9 and a half and 17, and the module is powered up and completes initialization. So that's interesting. That means it's receiving the serial data bus, wake up conditions, uh for setting the code, trailer, brake control, module detects that the ignition voltage is less than six v's uh.
When that happens, the trailer brake control module will be disabled for the remainder of the ignition cycle and the driver information center will display service trailer brake system, which we have service trailer brake system fantastic. So now, let's we don't need theory and operation or anything. We need to know we need to know what we need to know, and that is what she look like hello. Oh trailer, brake control, module, jl1 except 10 series. I don't know: let's go with that, one because they're both for jl1. I don't know what 10 series does that mean a half ton uh, let's see this is the control module here and our ignition voltage must be right here, uh oops, what's this data communication, the light blue? That's going to be serial data! Wake up! I know that on a gm so that ignition we're not concerned about we've got a five volt output, a full-time battery power which i assume we have, and so it looks like pin 15 - is our little guy we're after and what else that's the stoplight switch. Okay. Do we have brake lights because that's uh? Well, i don't know if that's going to be helpful junction box ignition in comes from this fuse over here miscellaneous ignition.
That's in the under hood fuse box that goes to trailer brake control relay that fuse and that fuse. There is our full-time power just for grins and giggles, because there was two different diagrams here and i don't know what it means by except 10 series. We will click on this one and it is still pin 15 so that doesn't matter to me. Okay, i think we have some direction folks.
Oh she got all the used car slime on it uh. What we need to do it does have some aftermarket stuff here. Lots of um looks like isolation, module for uh trailer, brake controller or for um, not trailer brake controller. This is the uh for the snow plow, but i see aftermarket 12-volt power, trailer power, feed, okay.
This is for aftermarket trailer brake controller. So we don't need that. Uh, let's find this fuse before we even get under there and get all dirty, because i think this thing i think we're gon na find. This is one of those cases where this baby she's shiny on the top side, but dirty on the bottom uh, because it's a low mileage, uh new york state, plow truck and when you see the coils rotting off the valve cover.
Well, you just know she's, not gon na be pretty under there, so what we might need to do is look for this little guy right here: miscellaneous ignition, fuse number 43, 10, amp and um see if we have power right here fuse box. If we do, then we're going to go down on this little girl and see what we find underneath, but let's get this lid off this thing here and see if i can find that fuse here. That's the diesel side! This is the gasoline side. So let me uh slide down boy.
They got this baby slimy. Okay, we turned the key on uh. We don't have to look hard because the diagram tells us view is number 43. we're going to take and click some of this stuff on here click.
Our vice grips right up here see if we got power, we got power at the stud number 43. Where is number 43? Let me find number 43 shouldn't have to look hard. I think it is this row right here which somebody's already been in, because this relay right here is partially pulled up the run crank relay so that means somebody's been yanking. The fuses 43 is the second one down. That is the one that is in backwards. It has power on both sides. Let's not get burned on that, though it doesn't mean it has both legs of the fuse right. Am i right? Well, you remember that trick when you get burned on one number, 43, pull her up.
She's, bright and shiny, looks clean in the hole feels like we have resistance both sides. So we'll stick that back in. We know we have power here, that's a good thing. Our testing here is done.
Let's go down so one thing i want to know prior to going uh down: there is: can we see data on the trailer, brake control module and that's a big no from the tb cm trailer manual? I think that's what they call it uh it's about. What's interesting is, is this: what's this boom, we can read codes. Well, we can't read data. So that's.
That's neat. People know how computer mumbo jumbo works. This guy. Doesn't i don't really care, but i wanted to go on there and see if we could see ignition voltage being at zero, but for whatever reason that inhibits our ability to see live data? So that's something worthy to note.
Needless to say, let's go find where this thing goes in which we already have it our diagram here and we're looking for pin 15, but let's go under there and find this module and then we're going to find a pin 15 where the ignition goes into it. I'm assuming we don't have power, perhaps also as you'll know, if you're looking at this diagram, hopefully you guys can see it. What do we got here? Your x number 205. We all know her and our x 102, all on the same wire.
Perhaps we could look and see uh if we go back here. We have no power, we're going to need to find where our x is living number 205 and number 102, because that's where we're going to break the system down we're dealing with some corrosion here. Folks, i'm thinking if i was a gambling man, i'm not, but i was that's where i'd be heading we're going old school. I got out the cardboard.
Ah, the people have been here. It's obvious. We've got the old, so this is the old trailer brake control relay here. They've mechanic number two.
I think it was did the relay mechanic number one. Did the fancy wiring job back here, which is a straight up mess, and then mechanic number three did this. So this tape is virtually worthless, i'm just taking it off there, so you can kind of see. So this is the relay this kind of visual inspection, everything here uh.
Of course, this tape here is also very worthless. I think what we'll do, instead of taking this connector off and such or just get some rhythm with, i don't know why they put this crap tape all over everything, uh we're after the pink wire right, i think, is what we told ourselves. So what all do we have? We've got lots of pinks back here. We don't just have this single single, pink wire here, all right i'll, tell you what let's take and uh break out the game. She needs a new knife, so we're gon na try to we're. Gon na have to see saw our way through this zip tie not too bad. Okay, well, they'll use car guy - you got after it under here too, with the old rattle can uh the frame on this chevrolet has had the classic dupont overhaul. So i think it's, this pink wire we're gon na be after and you know what every once in a while blind squirrel finds a nut because there you go.
Lady, there's your problem. So, let's uh, let's fix this wire - that's obviously broken right where we touched it and then see if it fixes our problem all right, let's see, are you still in frame for the most part, so this is kind of funny. I just had to go and tell mrs oh because at lunch time we were just talking about this gift. I have of finding broken wires, either that i'm the luckiest damn man alive, because this is my third one today.
My third broken wire that i fixed the first one was legendary uh, legendary level for you, fortnite players uh. I wish i would have recorded it was on a dodge nitro. It was an awesome repair uh with a short and the can see, data bus kick myself for not getting the camera on kick myself for not putting this one on the lift, um and then just like out of the miles of wire, pinpointed the bad wire. Like almost ridiculously almost like this one, almost like you know where it's broke, fella you're lying to us, but i'm not let me go get a red.
Butt is a little more connector, but anyhow i fixed that one like super guy was like pumped because the thing's been sitting for six months nobody's been able to fix it and it was pretty. It was a pretty nasty problem, um and then uh, you know, did another broken wire right after that same deal like zoomed right in right in the harness where it was broke, and you know i'm not trying to brag myself or anything. I'm just saying it's just it's just kind of comical at this point, especially when it's the third one of the day and then you just develop a game plan and you execute the plan, but perhaps this is not going to fix it. So before we get too excited - because perhaps this is where somebody put did the hokey pokey back here - testing for power only to find that they had none, thereby leaving it saying screw it and then it finally rotted a hole through it.
So we're not out of the water yet, but we at least found a problem that just so happens to be on the circuit. That has the problem all right, so we're going to let that solidify we're going to go see if we got calm still on, if not we're going to have to come down and still look for the real problem. So we're going to go here, i'm kind of holding this out of the bongo here we want to go here and then here and then here come on baby come on baby come on fail, so this is interesting. I came in, i cycled the key because if you remember correctly, when we read under um actions taken when code sets, is it disables the system until the next ignition cycle? So i just for poop and laughter cleared the codes and then you know cycle the ignition and our thing is now gone and you know if i squeeze the trailer brake controller. It now brings up the gain output, which i can change uh. Let me just cycle the ignition again: let's leave it off for a couple of seconds here, turn them back on, we'll show our headlights off and it's not flagging the trailer. Maybe we can't read live data unless i'm pretty nearly certain that you can't, though, maybe the all tell is not allowing us. No codes read codes.
That's what we're going to get for not actually checking it for power. We go to live data and there's no comms. So that's interesting: let's get that little guy yeah! That's electric brake force meter! Let's get this little guy should we have checked once we found the wire to see if i had power on it, yeah sure. But you know what the test lake is up here.
We were down there, we were just giving it a look with our peepers, then we started yanking on stuff, so we're going to use this we're going to plug this in we're going to see, and of course the other thing is too. We don't know if that trailer, brake control module is programmed. I don't think the chevy dealer could have programmed it with low mileage or wouldn't low voltage. So i don't know what to expect to see here.
Perhaps we can't read data without having it programmed. I don't know, i would think, though, that we would have a code saying you know: module configuration error or something anyway, let's go back here. Let me get this thing. We will slip it in the hole trying to get the one-handed handy here and i'm not real good at what do? We have ecu detected power 12 volt aux ground integrity.
Let's go up in the truck um. Do we have our turn signal? Yes, sir. We have that turn signal. Yes, sir, do we got the brakes? We got both brake lights and we've got some leds lighting up on our trailer brake controller.
We've got the marker lights, give it the no mercy reversey, we got no reverse lights back there, but fuse is pro, probably missing her blown and then so. This is our brake force. Let's crank that up to number, however, how it goes number 10. boom.
Isn't that fun so there it appears that's way out of focus, focus come on baby. It's led's messing with this thing, we'll give it full beans again yeah. It appears. The trailer brake system now functions.
Interesting still a little perplexed that we didn't have any oops scan tool, uh data, so i mean the best thing to do. There is, as i've told you in the past and gm is control module references. So it's going to tell us how to program it um, which i think it needs to be done with sps, which, let's see, needs to be programmed with yep uh. The service programming system. Oops just got some smuggy on there. It's over there helping josh yeah we'll have to fix that someday, but other than that, it tells me you know, module replacement and then scan tool info, which this indicates that, yes, we should have some data on the scan tool uh, which i've seen before in the Past which i've used the all tell for in the past, i'm gon na grab the factory scan tool, real, quick, i'm not gon na get too sidetracked on this simply because the system works. You know everything on this little guy functions as it should uh with no more codes, everything's cool, so i'm here with the old pictures things that park where they all think too. I'm gon na check these calibration number.
I'm gon na see if this thing has been programmed uh. More importantly, what we wanted to know we'll back out here we are in the uh trailer brake control module. As you see there go to the data stream we'll go to data, select all hit okay boom like that. So obviously it's an all tell problem great now, she's stalled come on chevy! Don't tell me this thing: just freaking puked on me right in my shop, that'll piss me right off.
Sometimes life sucks people. This is one of those times because literally i was just backing it out the door, verifying that we could read data on a trailer break module which now functions awesome. But now we got to make the call and say: hey customer guess what your freaking chevy died on me. It's of course got three quarters tank gas, probably fuel pumps, puked in it, i'm going to do a scan.
While we got this hooked up, see if it tells us anything handy handy handy, let me get on here and whack on the gas tank see if the pump just died. Like i said this thing is pretty low mileage where's the miles on this 58k. So she's done a lot of sitting boys. Let's grab some diagnostic equipment.
Why value's not an option as far as we made it with a chevrolet that's another day in my life, let's come over here and duck under the mirror. Stick that on the diagnostic post. I has no codes so we're gon na turn. The fuel pump on with the scan tool be very quiet.
I don't hear anything. I don't hear anything over here. Let's get our cardboard and honest to goodness, i'm just guessing at this point i mean if this doesn't work. Well, let's do some real diag cardboard.
Of course it's got a tank shield. Awesome you hear any humming. No, no humming freak me man. This is the part that sucks is we're gon na end up working on some rotted out, crap chevy truck.
Let's just see if it is a fuel delivery problem which i'm guessing it is just just because we don't hear the fuel pump running. I think we saw the commanded on, let's get a little push on the schrader valve and we got enough no go juice. All right. We don't hear the fuel pump running and we have no fuel pressure. If this thing needs to pull the pump, i don't know what this guy's gon na do. This truck is about smoked. Stick this back on here done here. Let's go to the fuse box.
First things: first, i'm gon na go get a skin tool, i'm familiar with them. Put this one away so we're gon na, because we're gon na need some wire diagrams and we're gon na need to know who goes where under here and which relays which and which fuse is, which and all that stuff fuel pump is supposedly this one here see If it clicks, i think it's a non-clicking type, but yeah that's a good diagram. All right, we got ta calm down, not be all pissed off. Uh fuel pump.
Uh fuse number 20 is a 25 a set right on this thing: fuel pump, 20. where's number 20 right there. So there's our fuel pump relay there's number 20.. There's a fuel pump relay right there.
This is our fuse that one there right now. It is not hot because the relay is not active, it does look a little funny, she's a little cocked off there, let's not fiddle with it. Just yet, let's go here. Ah, let's see we want to do list.
We want to do engine control, module, select our thing get our test over here. Oops, this fella got click happy get out of there. Fuel pump relay make sure our lines are connected. They are i'm going to turn it on.
I just heard it click. I don't hear any oh, i just heard it click off too. Maybe it only clicks on momentarily. Okay, let me set you down, so we can do this hold on we're gon na go right in that fuse turn it off on okay, that's one side of the fuse off on, and i just heard the fuel pump run.
I pushed down on that fuse. I betcha, i bet you where's our little pliers. I think we're swinging off our water too. You got ta have water, oh man, let's see if this fuse is crusty, maybe we can learn two lessons.
Nope yep. She is loose in the hole. Somebody knows it because i'm thinking i'm thinking she's been fiddled with, because that pulled out way too flipping easy folks, oh yeah, there's no there's no resistance there at all that fuse just flip flops around in the hole see just i pretty much drop it in the Hole - and it just drops right in there's no resistance at all. Let me get a light, so we beat the out of this fuel pump for no reason.
Oh she's nasty. It is all green and crusty in there. The one this terminal on the side towards the back is all burned out. So what do you do? Well, let me teach you a little trick me mom taught me: you spread the whole legs apart there just like, so you give them a tweak and you slip it right in because i need to get this pile of poo out of my bay.
This guy needs to buy a new fuse box turn it off. Ah, we got fuel pressure now fellas. So what happened there? Mr? Why did this die in your watch? Well because i put the lid back on the fuse box. That's why right before pulling this thing out talking with you, fine folks, i tell you this truck is uh is gon na have a lot of this. It's got a lot of little hidden, hidden, gems here and unfortunately, the guy who just purchased it's gon na start. Finding out here pretty quick, because this sucker is rotted and you're, going to have a lot of corrosion, a lot of connectors. A lot of things like this that are going to start popping up on these low mileage trucks that just sit all the time. It's unfortunate.
But it's just the way it is baby just to make sure it's not a fluke here. I do want to go like this um. We want to go to the trailer brake control, module our original problem and see we have no data. So it's an all-tell thing.
All right, i guess we answered that question. Then we learned something else along the way yeehaw. Now at this point, can we please end the video? Be careful you see this big mirror it's tight to my building. I just want to push it in, but you got your typical used car guys stuff.
You touch that mirror, guess what you're buying i mean i wouldn't buy it because obviously, this piece of crap's glued together. But you see what i'm saying, because it's like this, i almost reached up give her one of these just folded it in, but then you see this crap, this thing's held together with bubble, gum and rust baby. So that's the world we live in today. Folks, the used car guy is king right now, uh temporarily short term on this earth.
He is what goes around comes around, though. That's what i say eventually, and by that i mean i want you to come around down into that comment. Section the comments, the concerns, the institute, the facebook uh, thanks for the good juju to get us through the whole fuel pump, chewbacca i'll. Let the fella know he's gon na need a fuse box um.
Let me shut this off because we're gon na talk about that. Last time i shut the truck off it didn't start on these chevrolets. I think you guys have probably seen me do this multiple times or any vehicle for that matter, particularly in the northeast. We have a tendency to go through and check fuses check power on the side par on that side.
That does not mean that the fuse has the legs on the bottom of it means it has at least one okay. So always do that verify power. Both sides pull the fuse, have a little look-see because you'll get cases like that. Where you go to slip it in the hole, anything boop it just you know, sealed hot dog down the hallway routine.
You know it's not even touching the sides type thing and you know that's when you know why did somebody shove a test light in there or is it? You know fretting and arcing? And you know the holes wore out and you know that's that's that so um. So make sure you check that it'll burn you someday and if you work in a shop and you want to mess with your buddies, pull some fuses out of their fuse box, cut the accessory side off the fuse and stick them back in and uh you'll watch A guy try to diag a fuse with a missing leg for hours. It's comical, it's fun! Unless it's you, then it's no fun. So don't get burned on that and just show our viewers. If i can do it, you can do it thanks for watching.
So, the dealer states that the module needs programmed but it has "low voltage" and can't program it. So the dealer sends it out of the shop not fixed?!! It hasn't changed in 40 yrs. with dealerships, obviously!
exciting adventure, mind blowing energy, a true thriller, absolutely amazing, excellent video, that's another fine mess you have gotten yourself out of, good job and thanks
Runs and drives when towed to the auction lot.
58k in a 10 year old truck even if only used as a plow truck is almost unheard of. This is when I attempt reading the computer to see if original or a re manufactured that has a fresh reprogram.
I needed a computer for a 2002 T&C minivan that had 115k miles, belonged to my folks. Dealer wanted stupid money for a computer. Local Napa type store needed serial and miles for the electronic dash programming. When they programmed the computer, they were 10k lower on miles that the picture I provided.
I've had a few folks come into my shop for second opinions on used cars they're looking to buy recently. A couple were just ridiculous and don't come anywhere close to passing a state inspection. It definitely is a rough time to buy a car right now.
I wish I had a nickel for every time I have said "I'll take lucky over good any day of the week"
Ok Eric, I have been watching your videos for a few years and the videos and you are absolutely the best. I do have one question. Is NAPA a sponsor?
I'm glad to see this kind of stuff happens to you also. I start on one problem and either uncover or create another.
He sniffs out the rust, broken wires and rot, Dr. O finds out what the others can not! The 😎✔🇨🇦👍
A lot of mechanics are gonna have a bad day with fuses tomorrow due to everyone that watched this video, lol
i always wonder if Eric keeps all the love letters from his customers in a folder somewhere
Watching you banging the shit out of that fuel tank made me laugh my ass off. It reminded me of an old black and white tv we used to have. Every time the screen would go fuzzy, we would slap the hell out of the side until it fixed the problem. Lol!!!
Go slappy!
My rollback has literally been sitting at a local diesel mechanic shop for one while year. It went in to get the 5.9 Cummins rebuilt. I have videos from a year ago when he pulled the motor apart and tore it down. It then sat several months awaiting to go to machine shop, it finally went there and I'm early summer last year. I was given run around run around run around being told machine shop was slow and only had one guy that was able to put the sleeves in the block. When I went in October to pick the head and block up from the machine shop they claimed it was the mechanic giving them the run around that it had been done for some time and mechanic kept calling them every month or so trying to negotiate the cost of the work done. The machinist told me if this mechanic brings anyone's parts to him again, he will throw them out into main street and not care what happens to them. Here it is 7 months later and my motor still isn't put together. Really frustrated at this point.
Talk about putting a dress on a pig… Like you said that's today's used cars guy. Everyone have a great day Greetings from Lake City 🇺🇸🌴😎
I learn so much from your content, Erik!… And always with a smile on my face. Thx bud
Failure is not an option. If Eric O. Worked for NASA in 1970 Jim Lovell would have been the 5th man on the moon.

Very interesting… Love learning new stuff… You're right, sure don't come across the plain jane work truck much anymore… Love always…..
And make sure that person you mess with has a sense of humor & is not going to hang you up on the overhead hoist 😂🤣
"Trailer brake control module"? I don't want to go to the moon. I just wanna take my girl to the movies in my Chevy.
